We have a bunch of movies and the problem has been that we don’t know what we have or what they are about when we want to watch a movie. So, I have been looking for a way to catalog the movies.

After a long search of sifting thorough applications I found a Windows application called My Movies. When a movie is entered in to My Movies the app searches the internet and downloads all sorts of info including Actors, Cover Art, Description, etc… The other two things I like about My Movies is that first it is free (for the basic functionality) and it saves all the data in a MS SQL database. With the MS SQL database I figured I could write a little web app that would display movie info in a web browser. This way I could access movie info from any web browser on my network including Windows, Mac, Wii, iPod Touch, Ubuntu box, etc…

Here are some screen shots of what I got so far.

Today (Tuesday, June 17, 2008) is Firefox 3 Download Day. Help Firefox set a Guinness World Record for most software downloads in 24 hours.

I have been using Firefox for the past 4+ years on my Windows PCs, on my Linux Ubuntu box, on my Mac, and my thumb drive to use anywhere. It is the safest way to use the internet. It’s got Add-ons galore to customize it the way you want. Some of the add-ons I use are: ColorZilla, del.icio.us, DownThemAll!, Firebug, Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer, Gmail Notifier, Google Calendar Notifier, Google Notebook, Greasemonkey, MeasureIt and Remember The Milk for Gmail. Don’t forget to add your favorite search engines to the search box like Google, Wikipedia, IMDB, Flickr Tags, Amazon, and SearchMash. One cool feature I use everyday is the inline find.

So dump IE already and move on up to FF.

Some Tips:

Ctrl+Tab to move through your tabs.

Ctrl+Shift+T to open the last closed tab.

Middle click on link to open link in new tab.

Type “about:config” in address bar to access more advanced settings.

Ctrl+T to create a new tab.

I was thumbing through the Fry’s Ad the other day and saw a deal on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) I have been pondering, the Buffalo LinkStation Live, for only $140. It is nothing great but would do the job cheap. After getting there and looking around Michelle noticed another NAS on sale, the Iomega StorCenter Network Hard Drive 1TB for $260. It is a dual 500 GB drive NAS with RAID 1 support (so all of our data is on 2 drives in case of a HD failure), Gigabit Ethernet, and support for Mac, Linux and Windows.

I got the Iomega NAS home and realized I didn’t have a Gigabit switch or a Gigabit Network Interface Card (NIC) in my desktop computer. So, I ordered a D-Link Gigabit Switch from Newegg.com and picked up a D-Link NIC from Office Depot.

After getting everything installed I set up the NAS to have home directories for Michellle and I, a media share (to store all of our pictures, music and videos), and a general pubic share to save whatever else. On the Windows PC I set up two network drives: the H drive (map to the user home share) and N drive (map to the media share). On the Mac I set it up to mount the NAS at login. I also configured iTunes on both our Windows and Mac computers to access the music on the NAS from a common music library.

Now all I need is a Gigabit Wireless N Router to replace the G in the family room.

If only I could get rid of the Actiontec (POS Verizon).

Currently all it does is automatically put your user name in when asking a question. I also need to make the login and register pages more pleasing on the eyes.
